Debunking Europe Travel Myths

At Bella Vita Travels, every itinerary we design is 100% tailor-made. No two travelers are the same, which is why we customize each trip based on your interests, travel style, and pace.

That said, there are some common questions and misconceptions we hear from clients at the beginning of the planning process. With so much information online—and plenty of social media itineraries—it’s easy to get the impression that Europe is smaller and easier to “check off” than it really is.

To make planning your trip a little easier, here are a few of the most common myths we hear from travelers.

“Florence Isn’t in Tuscany?” — Geography Myths We Hear All the Time

It might sound surprising, but travelers often refer to visiting Florence and Tuscany as if they are two completely separate places.

In reality, Florence is actually the capital of Tuscany and has been the cultural and political heart of the region for centuries. The confusion usually comes from the way people explore the area today.

Many visitors choose to stay in the Tuscan countryside—perhaps near Montepulciano, Montalcino, or San Gimignano—and then take day trips into Florence. Others stay in Florence and venture out to vineyards, hill towns, and wineries throughout the region.

Either way, Florence is very much part of Tuscany.

There are plenty of other geography mix-ups we hear as well. For example, many travelers assume Cinque Terre is located in Tuscany. It is actually part of Liguria along the Italian Riviera.

Another common misconception is that Nice is in Italy because of its architecture and cuisine. In reality, Nice sits in France on the Côte d’Azur and only became French in the 19th century.

Similarly, Monaco is often mistaken for simply another city on the French Riviera. However, it is actually its own independent country.

In Spain, many travelers believe myths like Barcelona is the capital of the country, when the capital is actually Madrid. Barcelona is instead the capital of the region of Catalonia and has its own distinct culture and identity.

Understanding how Europe’s regions fit together can make a big difference when planning a smooth and enjoyable itinerary.

MYTHS: “We’ll Just See the Whole Country in a Week”

Other myths we hear often? That travelers can see an entire country—especially Italy—in one short trip.

It’s certainly possible to visit a few destinations in a week. BUT it’s important to remember that a country like Italy is incredibly diverse. Each region has its own cuisine, landscapes, traditions, architecture, and pace of life.

Trying to move to a new destination every day or two often means spending more time packing, traveling, and checking into hotels than actually experiencing the places you came to see.

Instead of appreciating a destination, you end up simply passing through it.

For example, cities like Rome, Florence, or Venice each deserve several days to explore properly.

The same is true across Europe. Countries like France, Spain, or Portugal are filled with regions that feel completely different from one another. The culture of Paris is very different from that of Bordeaux, just as Barcelona feels different from Seville.

A week in a country can absolutely be wonderful—but it’s best spent focusing on a few destinations and experiencing them well, rather than trying to see everything at once.

Why Slower Travel Makes for a Better Trip

One of the biggest travel lessons we share with clients is that Europe is best experienced at a slower pace.

Rather than rushing from city to city, staying longer in fewer places allows you to really absorb the culture. You have time to explore beyond the major landmarks, take day trips to nearby villages, enjoy leisurely meals, and experience the rhythm of local life.

Understanding the geography and allowing enough time in each destination can transform a trip from a whirlwind of landmarks into something truly memorable.

At Bella Vita Travels, we specialize in designing fully customized itineraries that help travelers see the highlights while still enjoying the slower, authentic experiences that make Europe so special. Whether you’re visiting one region or several countries, we’re always happy to guide you through the planning process and help you make the most of your time.
