Wanderlust Hotel Openings: Spain, Portugal, Morocco
Though 2020 has been globally devastating for the tourism industry, we are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. With the first rounds of a vaccine being distributed in North America and Europe, we are hopeful for travel-filled 2021. Even so, when global travel slammed to a halt in the midst of international lockdowns, the hospitality and travel industry did not stop. Many hotel openings and new properties went ahead as scheduled. Even more positive news? Many other new and promising places are opening within the next year. The past weeks we have shared some of anticipated openings in Italy and France. This week, we will share with you some of our wanderlust inducing openings in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Hotel Palácio de Canavezes, Porto, Portugal: opening Spring 2021
This gorgeous property overlooking the River Tamega, on the edge of the Douro Valley, also has historical significance. The area has been visited since the 1100’s (even by the Portuguese royal family), renowned for its thermal waters and their medicinal healing properties. It is now in the hands of the luxury Campbell Gray group (they have unique properties in Bahrain and Scotland). It will be reopening with 52 rooms and suites. There will also be a huge spa complex, making it a destination throughout the continent for holistic wellbeing. It is also just 35 minutes from the center of the vibrant city of Porto. This makes the location is great for relaxing as well as exploring this area of Portugal.
Immerso, Ericeira, Portugal: opening Summer 2021
Immerso will become first 5-star property in the seaside area of Ericeira. Located only about 40 minutes from Lisbon, it is famous for its surf scene. This 37-room hotel, though, will be more than just a place to rest your head. The hotel will use natural materials and a design that recalls the land and the sea. Immerso has the goal to fully harmonize itself with the environment. With several dining options planned (headed by acclaimed chef Alexandre Silva), the property also plans a swimming pool and bar, a vegetable garden and its own beer and a surfboard production studio.
Sé Catedral Hotel, Porto, Portugal: spring 2021
This trendy, youthful 77-room hotel will be part of the Hilton Tapestry collection. With a prime location next to the cathedral (one of Porto’s top sites), the property will also boast a mixology bar and on-site restaurant. With the goal of creating a relaxed, modern and fun environment, this property is sure to become a place to be seen in one of Portugal’s most intriguing cities.
Can Ferrereta, Mallorca, Spain: Opening summer 2021
Opening in summer 2021 on the breathtaking island of Mallorca this property is in a beautifully restored 17th century townhouse. Many of the 32 rooms will have private patios or terraces, surrounded by the lush inland gardens of the island. There is also a semi-olympic swimming pool, two bars, a Mediterranean restaurant and a full spa. Located in the quaint village of Santanyí, guests will appreciate the authentic and tranquil location on the southeast coast.
Six Senses, Ibiza, Spain: summer 2021
Perhaps one of the most anticipated openings in Europe, the Six Senses has a breathtaking location on the world famous island of Ibiza in Cala Xarraca Bay. The 134-guest rooms will be the first sustainable resort and residential community within the Balearic islands. Besides the sweeping views and incredible terraces, the property has some of the most amazing amenities in the country. There will be 6 restaurants (one a communal farm to table), pop-up cooking classes, water sports and a kids club. The spa boasts not just a café and juice bar but also extensive tailor made yoga and fitness courses. Also planned are an oxygen bar and an anti-aging clinic. Came to Ibiza to dance? The 6 suites that comprise the Beach Caves are an exclusive venue you can enjoy music recorded at the in-house studio. It’s truly an unparalleled opening, and we cannot wait to visit.
Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid, Spain: Open
This restoration has a spectacular location in the famous Golden Triangle of Art, opposite the Prado & Thyssen museums. The hotel was built in 1910 under the supervision of legendary hotelier César Ritz. The renovation of this belle-époque marvel was completed in 2020. The unique and sophisticated design includes 100 guest rooms as well as 53 suites. There are also specialty suites, like the Mandarin suites located in the turrets with terraces and views overlooking the Prado. Famous chef Quique Dacosta overlooks the 5 restaurants, including a signature restaurant in the hotel garden. Other offerings include a champagne bar with a traditional tapas menu.
Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, Spain: Open 2020
This ambitious project could only be done as well as it has by the incredible Four Seasons luxury hotel chain. It is located in the very heart of the capital within walking distance of all the main attractions. Over the course of several years, they transformed 7 historical buildings into one 200-room hotel. There is also amazing rooftop dining by Spanish celebrity chef Dani Garcia, a four-level spa and a pool terrace. Impeccable service from the front desk to the courtesy car by the entrance door – it’s a great luxury choice in the Spanish capital.
Conrad Rabat Arzana, Morocco: 2021
The Hilton chain will be opening a 120 room property located just a short drive from the city of Rabat. The hotel will have amazing views of the nearby lagoon and Atlantic coast beach. There will also be two restaurants as well as two full-service lobby and pool bars. The Arzana luxury development is a great location for exploring this part of Morocco, and a great seaside break from the desert and cities.
Atlas Widan, Marrakesh, Morocco
This 5-star boutique guesthouse is a wonderful alternative to those wishing to stay outside the hectic (and incredibly fun) center of Marrakesh. It is located just 6 miles outside the city center on the road to Ouarzazate. Is a great location for tranquillity while still being close to the Medina and the bustle of its souks. The rooms are decorated traditionally and the lush gardens and pool area are a true haven on a hot day in the city.
