Our Favorite Things to Experience in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is becoming one of the world’s favorite tourist destinations, who flock to the city to appreciate the unique history and architecture, delicious local foods and relaxing pace of life, and the stunning scenery amidst a warm Mediterranean climate. Whether your idea vacation includes browsing open-air markets and enjoying cafes on sunny public squares, visiting fantastic locations made famous in TV and movies, digging deep into history and culture at museums, or relaxing on sparkling beaches and enjoying clear blue water, Dubrovnik is a destination for all of it.

Here are some of the best things to do on a vacation in Dubrovnik:

Tour the city walls and Fort Lovrijenac. The city walls of Dubrovnik are iconic, and make the city instantly recognizable around the world. Visiting the walls shows off the most extraordinary views of the city, the sea, and the surrounding landscapes. The walls also offer insight into the unique history of a city that resisted invader after invader, continually upgrading and reinforcing their defenses as the weapons of war changed and evolved, and ingeniously preserving its independence. A tour of the city walls includes a tour of nearby Fort Lovrijenac, watching over Dubrovnik from a vantage point that seems to have grown from the rocky cliffside beneath it.

Explore Old Town and enjoy Croatian cuisine. The narrow streets of Old Town Dubrovnik are an amazing example of medieval architecture and small-town European life. Around every corner is a new vantage point, a charming scene, or an appealing little shop or cafe, tempting you to while away the hours just exploring. Croatian cuisine features seafood just harvested from the pure ocean waters, and olive oil and local wines brought from neighboring hillsides. The simple ingredients, hearty flavors, and satisfying aromas from the many local restaurants are a great way to take a break from walking around town and gather your energy for a night of dancing.

Cable car to Mount Srd. Mount Srd is just outside of Old Town, rising gently behind the city. The mountain is a favored recreation spot and seat of pride for Croatians, as a symbol of the independence of the city. The cable car is an incredible way to reach the summit, offering breathtaking views and quick transport to this picturesque peak overlooking the beautiful city, the sea dotted with islands, and the green landscapes rising gently inland.

Visit Lokrum Island. If the summer days in Dubrovnik get too hot, it’s always nice to steal away to nearby Lokrum Island. Shaded with exotic trees and steeped in history, Lokrum Island offers swimming and snorkeling, as well as simply relaxing in botanical gardens or cool cafes. Lokrum is just a few minutes away from Old Town by ferry, but it’s a tropical oasis where locals go to enjoy the ocean and relax in nature.

Lapad beaches. If your Mediterranean vacation wouldn’t be complete without sunbathing on golden beaches, head to nearby Lapad. Just minutes away from Old Town, Lapad offers seaside promenades, golden sand, blue seas, and serene views. A welcome contrast to the rocky shores of Dubrovnik, the beaches of Lapad are calm and welcoming, inviting a variety of water sports and summer activities. Stroll along the promenade with a cool drink or ice cream, to reach the end of the peninsula and see one of the most beautiful views of the islands in the Dubrovnik archipelago.

Party all night. Dubrovnik is known for its sparkling nightlife, with clubs and DJs and dancing in striking architectural settings and an atmosphere that is welcoming to all. From bars and clubs inside the city’s formidable forts and towers, to cocktails on the beach, it’s an amazing place to relax and have a party.

Dubrovnik has so much to offer, and visitors discover more things to enjoy about this incredible city year after year. These are just a few of the unique experiences you can have in the Pearl of the Adriatic.
