Best Wineries: Quinta de la Rosa, Douro Valley, Portugal
Portugal has a long and unique history of wine production that is perhaps most known for its famous fortified wine- port. Port is a fortified wine made in the UNESCO world heritage site of the Douro Valley, a magical region full of dramatic scenery and home to the oldest demarcated wine production region in the world. The Douro valley is a must-see for wine lovers. Its terraced vineyards sloping up and down through the hills, hugging the areas namesake river, are simply breathtaking. Though the whole area itself is worth a stop even if you don’t imbibe, for those that enjoy a taste (or several) the Douro valley is also home to several wineries you can visit to learn more about Portuguese viticulture.
Quinta de la Rosa, located just outside of the town of Pinhão, is a family run winery that produces port, wine, craft beer and olive oil all with a spectacular view. It’s one of our absolute favorites in the area, with wonderful wines and hospitality to match.
Not all the wineries in the Douro valley are open for tastings to the public, but Quinta de La Rosa not only does a lovely tour, but they also propose several options for tastings that can also be pared with meals at their onsite restaurant that specializes in local products. From the restaurant, the terrace offers sweeping views of the river, and for those feeling more active, you can hike through the vineyards via several trails to the town of Pinhão.
If you fall in love with the view, they also have newly refurbished rooms that you can stay in for several nights to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy even more of their wines (you don’t have to worry about driving home!).
The Douro valley is a truly magical piece of Portugal, and Quinta de La Rosa is a wonderful choice for a winery visit- or stay- that lets you experience the local viticulture with an amazing view.
